Darkness Haunts by Susan Illene

| Cover by PhatPuppy Art |
Melena has a few special skills the Army didn't provide, but the odds are still against her. She’s got to come up with a plan fast that doesn't involve her, or her friend, dying. But danger likes to play it rough. A war for power is about to rise in Fairbanks and if she wants to get Aniya back, she’s going to have to step right into the middle of it.

Teaser for Darkness Haunts
I didn’t make it outside in time. The sups pulled a late-model, black BMW into an empty parking spot right in front of the bar. My SUV sat three spaces past it. I kept walking. Please don’t let them notice me.“Hey, pretty lady,” the driver said. The only vamp in the group had to be the one to notice me. He stepped right into my path.Avoid the eyes or he’ll know.I stared at a small stain on the collar of his brown suede jacket. Dried blood? The two werewolves snickered. “You can take that one for yourself, man. We’re going inside.”Rock music spilled out as they opened the bar door. I didn’t look back. The vamp in front of me held all of my attention. He appeared to be in his mid-twenties, but was actually closer to thirty. He’d been undead for about five years. I could take him…probably. My hand itched for my gun, but I remembered Wanda’s words from long ago. “Melena, don’t ever bring a gun to a vampire fight. You’ll get one shot off before they kill you.”Okay, fine, plan B.I put my hands in my pockets. “You wanna get out of my way?”“Why don’t you look at me, pretty lady?” Yeah, because that would be such a good idea. He was too young to compel anyone with his voice. In another few years he’d have that skill, but not yet. He had to use the eyes for now.I continued to stare at the stain on his jacket. He had hurt an innocent human. For all I knew it could have been Aniya. I clinched my fingers around my pocket knife. This guy had to be handled very carefully.“Get out of my way,” I said through clinched teeth. “I’m not interested.”His hand shot out to wrap around my throat. I flinched, but his grip wasn’t so tight I couldn’t breathe. Dead prey made bad meals for vampires.“Look. At. Me.” He forced my head up, but I kept my eyes averted. In my hand, I flipped open my knife and pressed it hard against the bulge in his pants. The tip didn’t go through, but the threat was clear. He loosened his grip on my throat enough so I could speak.“Back the fuck off,” I said, “or else this is really going to hurt.” Some people think the bigger the knife, the better. If used properly, a three inch blade could be every bit as effective. He backed off.“Bitch,” he spat.I smiled and held up my weapon. “Go inside before I change my mind and use this anyway.”A muscle ticked in his jaw. I thanked God he was too young to be a real threat. He hesitated a moment longer before making a move to pass me. I stepped aside, giving him plenty of room. My knife stayed up where he could see it.He tried to catch my eyes one more time. He kept going when it didn’t work. I’d had years of practice keeping my eyes averted when vamps were around. It had kept me alive, though I preferred to avoid them altogether. One day, I’d run into a vampire who wouldn’t forget he could heal from a knife wound—even if it was pointed at his genitals.

Instead of making the traditional post high school move and attending college, Susan joined the U.S. Army. She spent her eighteenth birthday in the gas chamber — an experience she is sure is best left for criminals. For eleven years she served first as a human resources specialist and later as an Arabic linguist (mostly in Airborne units). Though all her duty assignments were stateside, she did make two deployments to Iraq where her language skills were put to regular use.
After leaving the service in 2009, Susan returned to school to study history with a focus on the Middle East. She no longer finds many opportunities to test her fighting abilities in real life, unless her husband is demanding she cook him a real meal, but she’s found a new outlet in writing urban fantasy heroines who can.

Published December 7th 2012 by Etopia Press
The world's going to end in fire…and it's all Kyle's fault.
Kyle Wolfe's world is about to crash and burn. Just weeks away from graduation, a fire kills Kyle's two best friends and leaves him permanently scarred. A fire that Kyle accidentally set the night he cheated on his boyfriend Danny with their female friend, Shira. That same day, a strange new planet, Obscura, appears in the sky. And suddenly Kyle's friends aren't all that dead anymore.
Each time Kyle goes to sleep, he awakens to two different realities. In one, his boyfriend Danny is still alive, but Shira is dead. In the other, it's Shira who's alive...and now they're friends with benefits. Shifting between realities is slowly killing him, and he's not the only one dying. The world is dying with him. He's pretty sure Obscura has something to do with it, but with his parents' marriage imploding and realities shifting each time he closes his eyes, Kyle has problems enough without being the one in charge of saving the world...

Excerpt:Closing my eyes, I imagine New Mexico burning, can almost smell it, the pungent pine, fireball mesquite, and smoldering cacti. I should be worried about the damage the UV’sdoing to my scars, but after tonight, none of that will matter.Just when you think it can’t possibly get any hotter or the mercury will explode, thetemperature rises just a few more degrees. Today, Coyote’s Luck lies in a simmeringmirage, hotter than any hell imaginable. The crush of mesquite huddling between the tombstones offers little respite from the sun.Sticking to the dappled shade, I thread my way toward Danny’s grave. I’m not alone. She looks like a ghost with the white sundress fanning around her legs, her long blackhair teased by the warm breeze. For a moment, I think it’s one of the ch’iindi made flesh, until she turns at the sound of my step.Gabriela, her face a teary-eyed frown. She folds her arms and returns her gaze to thegrave. When did she get so thin? She was always so voluptuous, a shorter, less saggyversion of her mother. Now she looks more like a sixteen-year-old kid, barely there inlayers of cotton. We stand in silence, both just staring at the grave. The rosaries dangle over the stone, tiedin knots around the stems of already dead flowers. There’s a white and blue beaded one,the one that was attached to Danny’s bed, the one he’d kiss at night before going to sleep.“I miss him so much,” Gabriela says eventually.“So do I.”“I blame you, you know.” She casts me a sidelong glance.“Maybe you should.”She nods and sniffs and fingers one of the blooms turned brown by the heat.“Dead, all of it.” She tears the petals from the stalk. “Little Maria, now Daniel.” She turnsher dark eyes on me, searching for something I wish I could give her.“This is killing my parents. Daniel was their only son. They’ll never have more children.Once, I had a brother. Now I’m alone. Sister to dead siblings.”That’s the most Gabriela’s ever said, to me at least. I’m stunned into uncomfortablesilence. There’s nothing I can say that’ll make it right. But tonight, maybe there’ll besomething I can do.“I wish I could make it right.” My words sound so pathetic. She harrumphs and digs her sandaled toe into the dirt. “Nothing can make Daniel dyingright.”“I’m sorry.” There is nothing else I can say without trying to explain the whole confusingstory and Gabriela’s not the type to believe in rifts in reality.“Tell Daniel you’re sorry. He’s the one who died because of you.” She takes a deliberatestep away from me, crosses herself, offering prayers in Spanish to the ether.“I loved him, you know.” Maybe I am to blame, but she makes it sound like I don’t give acrap that he’s dead.“Obviously not enough.”

Excerpt from Chapter 28:The first thing I see when I wake up is a pair of beautiful green eyes. It’s Leo.He is holding a bar of chocolate in his hand, and he doesn’t have a sleeping bag. I crawl sleepily out of mine.“Are you okay?” he asks.“I had a bad dream,” I yawn.“Really? I thought I heard you cry out.”“So? Can’t a girl have some privacy in a bad dream? Why are you awake?” The rest are asleep.“Just checking on you.” He smirks, a little better than usual, with a smile hidden somewhere. “I brought you chocolate,” he offers.I take it abruptly. “You found my weak spot.” I bite hard. The chocolate tastes funny. “So what’s yours?”“Mine?”“Your weak spot.”“I don’t have one,” he says bluntly.“Not even me?”“That, we have to talk about when we get out of here alive.”

| The Boys of Summer by C.J. Duggan Book #1 in Summer Series |
Quiet seventeen-year-old Tess doesn’t relish the thought of a summertime job. She wants nothing more than to forget the past haunts of high school and have fun with her best friends before the dreaded Year Twelve begins. How did she let her friends talk her into working?
After first-shift disasters, rude, wealthy tourists and a taunting ex-boyfriend, Tess is convinced nothing good can come of working her summer away.
