MSMC #3: Sweeney Todd

Must See Movie Challenge

This is just a thing I created for myself as a sort of challenge. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of movies that people would call "must see movies" that I have not seen. So whenever I watch one of the movies on my must see list I'll do a post on it and tell if it really is a "must see". And hopefully they are all wonderfully epic movies :)

If you have any suggestions on movies I should put on that list, please leave a comment and tell me about it!

Releases:
Theaters: December 21, 2007
DVD: April 1, 2008

Cast:
- Johnny Depp
Helena Bonham Carter
Alan Rickman
Timothy Spall
- Sacha Baron Cohen
- Jamie Campbell Bower
- Laura Michelle Kelly
- Jayne Wisener
- Ed Sanders

Plot Summary:

The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical.

Favorite Things:
-All opening credits.
-The costumes & makeup.
-Depp looks pretty hot, but also angry while singing.
-I can't stop thinking of Prof. Snape when I see Alan Rickman.

Was it epic?
For me? Not at first, I tried watching this a few weeks ago. I got about an hour through the movie before I turned it off. It wasn't speaking to me. One thing that really got me was -the first forty minutes or so, literally nothing happens. They sing about the past, sing about the present, sing about Johanna, sing about meat pies.... But do nothing! I understand the back story was necessary, but there was a whole lot more that was just boring! Then it really picks up.

If you like musicals you will most definitely like this. I honestly don't care for musicals, although I love watching Glee... Go figure?! I always want to watch them and I want to love them so bad, but I just don't think I ever will. Bottom line is Johnny Depp is hot, and a great actor of course, he's even hotter when he sings. Helena Bonham Carter is amazing as well. It's actually a good movie. A good story. Has some killing. Great costumes. What more could you want?

So today I ended up giving it another try, minus the boring-ness of the first forty minutes, and it was a really great movie. Stuff finally started happening and then it really got good. So if you can just get past the first forty minutes you will see all the amazing-ness this movie has to offer. One of the things I loved most about it was Johnny Depp's face during the later half of the movie. He always looks so unhappy and depressed which was understandable, but it seemed like it was meant to be in a comical way. I totally recommend watching this movie if you like musicals or Johnny Depp.

MSMC #2: Lost In Translation

This is just a thing I created for myself as a sort of challenge. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of movies that people would call "must see movies" that I have not seen. So every Monday I will watch one or two of the movies on my must see list. And hopefully get through these wonderfully epic movies :)
If you have any suggestions on movies I should put on that list, please leave a comment and tell me about it!

Today my movie was:

Release Dates:
Theaters: August 29, 2003
DVD: February 3, 2004

Cast:

Plot Summary:
Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) are two Americans in Tokyo. Bob is a movie star in town to shoot a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi). Unable to sleep, Bob and Charlotte cross paths one night in the luxury hotel bar. This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship as they venture through Tokyo, having often hilarious encounters with its citizens, and ultimately discover a new belief in life’s possibilities.

Favorite Parts:
-Karaoke
-The "more intensity" part.
-The talk show scene.
-Anna Faris' characters interview.
-When Bill Murray is talking to the old guy and the ladies are laughing in the background.
-When he sees her in the crowd and stops the cab to get out and talk to her.

My Thoughts:
This movie was weird for me. I didn't completely love it. It was quite awkward, but my sister says it's supposed to be that way. I guess so... Anyways, I love Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, both are awesome actors. The movie was fun, they're in Tokyo and they meet around the hotel. And things just go from there. They do some karaoke, which was a fabulous part. It was fun to go through their "adventures" with them.

I think the more I sit and think about this movie, the more I will love it. I didn't really care for the ending, I thought it was unfinished and I hate not having a definite answer as to what happened and how it played out. In books- I don't mind making up my own ending, but in movies I want a for sure, clear ending. I mean, his actions are clear, but what comes after the end of the movie is unclear. Does that make sense? It's hard to say without saying what happened. I don't want to give anything away, because I'm sure there are some people who haven't seen this movie yet.

With all that said, I recommend this movie. I'd probably give it 3.5 - 4 stars... I haven't really made up my mind completely on what to rate it. But I can tell you this movie is not for everyone, but honestly, what movie is?

Movie Review: 21 Jump Street

"The only thing getting blown

tonight is their cover."

Release Dates:
Theaters: March 16, 2012
DVD: June 26, 2012

Cast:
-Johnny Depp (uncredited cameo)
-Peter DeLuise (uncredited cameo)

Plot Summary:
In high school, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) was a dork and Jenko (Channing Tatum) was the popular jock. After graduation, both of them joined the police force and ended up as partners riding bicycles in the city park. Since they are young and look like high school students, they are assigned to an undercover unit to infiltrate a drug ring that is supplying high school students synthetic drugs.

Favorite Parts:
-The party.
-When they're high.
-The real slim shady.
-Their first arrest.
-When they're in the bathroom stall together.
-Trying the whole "cop slide" across the car.

My Thoughts:
Since the original show was made before I was born I didn't watch it, but I had heard about it. Anyways, I thought this movie was really good. It was really funny. And of course there was a little bit of romance. Some action too -duh -they're cops, and they have guns and apparently science lessons are very helpful :) They were enemies at first, then became best friends, that always makes for a good story. It was pretty good to see Johnny Depp & Peter DeLuise in there for a few minutes, considering they were in the original. Also, Jonah Hill helped write the story for it :)

MSMC #1: Office Space

This is just a little thing I created for myself as a sort of challenge. I was pretty sheltered as a kid and fortunately haven't seen most of all the "must see" movies that everyone always talk about. I say fortunately because I can now watch them as an adult and most likely enjoy and understand them better :) With that said, I've started making my list, but I need some help. If there are some movies that you think are must see, then please leave a comment and tell me.

I was looking at IMDB's Top 250 movies of all time list. I kind of used this list as a guideline for what most people consider "classic" or "must see" movies. I didn't list everything on there that I haven't seen, because that would be a lot of movies. But here are the ones people seem to talk about most that I have not seen.

In no particular order:
-The Godfather
-Harry Potter #4 & on.
-Pulp Fiction
-Schindler's List
-Any of The Lord of the Rings
-Any of the Star Wars
-Goodfellas
-The Matrix
-Any of the Indiana Jones
-Casablanca
-Citizen Kane
-A Clockwork Orange
-The Breakfast Club
-Reservoir Dogs
-Some Like It Hot
-2001: A Space Odyssey
-Pan's Labyrinth
-Die Hard
-The Departed
-Jaws
-Snatch
-The Sixth Sense
-Hotel Rwanda
-Scarface
-The Wizard of Oz
-Donnie Darko
-V for Vendetta
-Million Dollar Baby
-Stand by Me
-A Beautiful Mind
-The Truman Show

So my plan for Must See Movie Monday -- I will watch one of them and then talk about it. And tell you all if I thought it was truly epic or not. And my first pick was Office Space

Comedic tale of company workers who hate their jobs and decide to rebel against their greedy boss.

Release Dates:
Theaters: Feb 19, 1999
DVD: Aug 31, 2000

Cast:

Favorite Parts:
-The O face.
-Michael Bolton rapping.
-All of the incidents with the printer.
-Every other part of the movie.

My Thoughts:
So YES! This movie is completely and utterly hilarious! It is totally epic! I have no idea why I never watched this movie, but I am so glad I did. I was thinking about it for days (I watched it last week & just now came up with the idea for these posts) and I'm still thinking about it. I almost want to watch it right now. One thing that made it funny was to see how things were so different. And this was only in '99! But their glasses and clothes. Wow. Hilarious.

Have you seen Office Space?
Do you consider it a "must see" movie?
Did you think it was funny? Stupid? Both?
Or are you like I was and haven't seen it yet? You should!

And for the people that think they know Office Space like the back of their hand. I found this online quiz, I thought it was fun. I didn't do too well though, considering I've only seen it once. Enjoy!
