Book Review: Purity by Jackson Pearce

A novel about love, loss, and sex -- but not necessarily in that order.

Before her mother died, Shelby promised three things: to listen to her father, to love as much as possible, and to live without restraint. Those Promises become harder to keep when Shelby's father joins the planning committee for the Princess Ball, an annual dance that ends with a ceremonial vow to live pure lives -- in other words, no "bad behavior," no breaking the rules, and definitely no sex.

Torn between Promises One and Three, Shelby makes a decision -- to exploit a loophole and lose her virginity before taking the vow. But somewhere between failed hookup attempts and helping her dad plan the ball, Shelby starts to understand what her mother really meant, what her father really needs, and who really has the right to her purity.

My Thoughts:
I thought that this was going to be a easy, simple, happy go lucky read... But it was so much more than that. Shelby really learned a lot about herself and about life. When I first discovered his book I couldn't wait to read it, but I finally got it. And all I have to say is: I really enjoyed the story.

I thought it was gonna be different when they started talking about the ball. I guess I thought that she was going to really hate it and be mean about it, but it really turned out to be a good experience for her and her dad. She really was a great character. And I loved Jonas and Ruby, what great friends she had. It made me smile when they were all together hanging out. It kind of reminded me of some old times.

I really liked the part where she's talking about religion and how she thinks her mother saw it. And how everyone else sees it. And if she thinks it's okay or not to believe. She says that she's jealous of Mona because she has it all figured out, Mona believes in God and has her faith and religion. I thought that was a really important part of the story. I think that's what a lot of people struggle with and I think most will be able to relate to the character.

I see how a lot of people could think that this is going to be a religious story, besides from the part I just talked about, it's not at all. It's really about Shelby going on this adventure with her dad, helping him plan this ball, even though she doesn't really follow all the beliefs that the ball represents. They really get to spend some time together and get to know each other again. Her and her father have only been co-existing since her mother died. She says that they have sort of ignored each other for years.

It's also about her losing her virginity, and that's a big part of it. But it ends up being so much more than that. She ends up finding love and finding what really matters most in life. And ultimately finding herself and figuring out what she wants from life and how she wants to live it. Instead of doing what others would want her to do. And I love her commitment to her mother, with the promises. Normally a teenage girl would say screw the promises, but they really meant something to her and I loved that.

Another thing is- I thought I had it all figured out. I kept thinking to myself: "Oh, this is so predictable, I know exactly what's going to happen." Although it did sort of happen. It wasn't exactly what I thought. Which I liked. I hate being right all the time. I like some surprise. All around it was a good book and a quick read since it's just over 200 pages. I gave it 3 stars, but it would really be 3.5. This was my first read from Jackson Pearce, and I like her writing style. I'll be trying some more of her books soon.

Finally Got These

I finally got some of the books I really wanted. Since I read If I Stay, I couldn't wait to read Where She Went and I finally got it. I got it in audiobook form just like I did If I Stay. I also got Reflected in You on audiobook, that is the second book in the Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day. The first is Bared to You, you can read my review here & Nika's review for both books: here.

I got We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson for my Halloween read, but didn't get around to it. But I did happen to read Purity by Jackson Pearce, which I've had on my list for a while now. My review for that will be coming up soon.

Library:
Where She Went by Gayle Forman
(Book #2 in If I Stay series)

Synopsis of If I Stay:
In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeen-year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck...

A sophisticated, layered, and heart-achingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all make, and the ultimate choice Mia commands.

Audiobook:
Reflected in You by Sylvia Day
(Book #2 in Crossfire Series)

Synopsis of Bared to You:
Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness—beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white-hot. I was drawn to him as I'd never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily...

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other's most private wounds... and desires.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn't tear us apart...

Synopsis:
Taking readers deep into a labyrinth of dark neurosis, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family and the struggle that ensues when a cousin arrives at their estate.

Happy Halloween!

This is our Halloween post! So Happy Halloween everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful day. This is also going to be my wrap up post. I didn't exactly follow schedule, but I tried... Which has to count for something right?! So I read 5 books, 1 naughty short story (with a naughty cover, so I didn't show it here, but it's Hannah's Choice by Selena Kitt) and 1 comic issue, I had a whole lot more on my list, but it's over now :) I'm pretty happy with what I read and some of the reviews are already up. I'll link them in the bottom. Enjoy!

22 on 22 Read-a-Thon: Reading Goals & Update

This will be my very first Read-a-Thon, but it's for a good cause. It's Bianca's Birthday Week! It's being hosted by Alexa @ Pages of Forbidden Love. If you want to sign up, the Sign Ups are still open.

Reading List:

Progress Updates:
Oct 22: Day 1
Pages Read Today: 88
Total Pages Read: 88
Time Spent Reading Today: 1.75 hrs
Total Time Spent Reading: 1.75 hrs
Feelings: Purity is going good. Almost done. Need to finish Shatter Me, but really want to finish it on audiobook, because that's how I started it. I just wish I could move up the waiting list at the library a little faster :)

Mini Challenge:
Today we are starting things off pretty easy with just some general questions about your reading habits:

1. What book did you start reading for this read-a-thon?

I just started Reflected in You.
Even though it wasn't on my list.
I tend to stray from TBR's.

2. What is one of your favorite books to re-read?

I haven't re-read any so far.
But most likely:
Harry Potter #1
13 Reason Why
Beautiful Disaster

3. Do you have a strategy for read-a-thons to maximize your time?

Just my regular strategy.
Read an hour in the
morning and in the night.

4. Do you snack while reading?

It depends. Usually I don't.
Because like I said it's
usually 6 am or 11 pm.
But if it's the daytime
and I'm hungry. Why not?!

Oct 23: Day 2
Pages Read Today: 95
Total Pages Read: 183
Time Spent Reading Today: 1 hr 56 mins.
Total Time Spent Reading: 3 hrs 56 mins.
Feelings: Finished Purity this morning. It didn't end how I imagined, but overall it was good. Review will be up for that soon. Instead of moving on to finish Shatter Me, I decided to start listening to Reflected in You on audiobook. I was just too eager to get to that one.

Mini Challenge:
Today’s challenge is all about showing off the top book you are waiting on!

Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire
Beautiful Disaster Book #2
Expected Publication: April 16, 2013
[Goodreads - Amazon - B&N]

Synopsis:

Beautiful Disaster told in Travis point of view.

How much is too much to love?

Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. Just when he thought he was invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Jamie McGuire's New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster Abby had her say. Now it's time to see the story through Travis's eyes.

Why I can't wait:
OH EM GEE!
Seriously, I think Beautiful Disaster was the best book I've read this year! And I do believe it's my favorite book. I can't think of a book that I would want to re-read more than this one. I've told everybody I know about it.

So for the sequel to be the same AMAZING story, but from Travis' point of view, will be really insightful. And to learn about his life even more. And really get to know him as a person. Wow! This is really going to be great. And really be one hell of a ride!

Oct 26: Day 5
Pages Read Today: 267
Total Pages Read: 496
Time Spent Reading Today: 5 hrs. 56 mins.
Total Time Spent Reading: 12 hrs. 5 mins.
Feelings: I really made time today for reading. I had my audiobook on my phone and took it everywhere. Listened to it in the shower, while doing blog posts, while eating and while getting ready to go see my local annual Rocky Horror Picture Show performance. I wanted to finish Reflected in You, but I was pretty tired. So I shall finish that on day 6. And find something else to start.

Oct 27: Day 6
Pages Read Today: 42
Total Pages Read: 538
Time Spent Reading Today: 1 hr.
Total Time Spent Reading: 13 hrs. 5 mins.
Feelings: I finished Reflected in You.. I don't really know what to say about that book. I'll have my review up for that as soon as I figure out how I felt. After that I went shopping, and then came home and watched a movie, so unfortunately I didn't read any more than that yesterday.

Oct 28: Day 7
Pages Read Today: 0
Total Pages Read: 538
Time Spent Reading Today: 0
Total Time Spent Reading: 13 hrs. 5 mins.
Feelings: I really wanted to get some reading done today, but I had to work. And after work, I was so lazy I just decided to watch a movie instead.

Mini Challenge:

Survey:
1. What was your favorite part of this read-a-thon?
Getting to see how much I actually read.
2. Did you enjoy the mini challenges?
Yes, it gave me something else to say rather than pages numbers.
3. What was your least favorite part of this read-a-thon?
Not getting as much read as I wanted to.
4. Anything I should do differently if I were to host another read-a-thon?
No, I think it was perfect. Good job Alexa! :)

Final Thoughts:
I loved doing this read-a-thon. It was my first if you didn't already know. And it's pretty cool to try and push yourself to read as much as possible and to time yourself and keep track of page numbers. It really makes me think of how much time I don't spend on reading when I could be, because I'm not doing anything really important. Haha.

Finished:

Happy Birthday Bianca!
